Is there a comparision on sound quality for the S series over the E series?

I own a s639f sony player. Looking for an upgrade since dog bites left the volume rocker difficult to press(otherwise still works). Is the S series sound quality better than the E series year after year (model after model~~s5XX,s6xx,s7xx//e5xx,e6xx,e4xx)
