Default Motorola takes on the Nano

Quote:
Motorola is taking on Apple's iPod Nano with the Motoactv, an Android-based media player designed specifically for people who work out. The company announced the new device at a press conference here Tuesday. Like the iPod Nano, the Motoactv has a touch screen roughly about 1 square inch. It has an FM radio. But it offers much more than music and radio.

Looks interesting but at $249 for the 8GB and $299 for 16GB version I predict a fail unless they drop price, too pricy IMHO.

Yeah, that pricing makes the Nano look almost cheap in comparison, and the Nano is already overpriced.

Looks pretty cool,I've read the details about it,it does use Bluetooth 4.0 while the Nano doesn't have that without an adapter connected to it. Everything gets more expensive when shoved into such small packages lol

I like the look and the idea, not the price.

From an mp3 player perspective all i care is that the bluetooth feature is supporting and carrying Apt-X tech. I don't think this device is, so bluetooth 3.0 or 4.0 doesn't really matter, its sound quality will suck even if its bluetooth feature doesn't strain battery life that much.

And whilst talking about adapters, the ipod nano 6th gen starts at $129 now, purchase one of creatives Apt-X Bluetooth dongles ($59) and u have an excellent sound quality streaming device for (starting at) $188 all up. Of course you get these adapters free if purchasing a wireless speaker set from them (I have 4 dongles/adapter currently lol).

But yeh, that motorala price tag is just wow.

the dongle or adapter makes it a bit awkward from the looks of it. no worries though, next gen nano will have BT and this moto will be irrelevant IMO.

and BB...feel free to send me one of those extra aptx adapters

I do hope Apt-X is bundled with future bluetooth devices, it really is significantly better than regular 2.1 etc. So far only Creative devices have them in them (the ziio 7 and 10 slates and the new X-fi 3).

IDvsEGO, no i'm hording them all! My Precious!!! ahahahaha

Are they nuts!
To compete with the Nano, a player should offer more feature, AND be around the same price point.

EPIC FAIL

I know I started this thing on price (post 2) and predicted fail as well but let's keep in mind that this is probably MSRP and we know how often that's beat ...

So in conclusion,it was a waste of money for Motorola to shove a bluetooth adapter into this thing, thus jacking up the price WAY higher than it should have been lol

True, but the MSRP of the 16GB Nano is $149.00 US, which is $150.00 US off the Motorola unit. How much more can Motorola cut off the price? Not that much, I think.

True, I love my Clip and Clip + also. IMO it should be the best selling exercise DAP on the market.

I was quite happy with my Ipod nano 4th generation, but the newest 6th generation looks like crap. Sure it is very tiny, but I don't know how you can consider it desirable to use a tiny touch screen on a dedicated mp3 player. Now you have to look at the unit for everything. I expect more companies to copy this Apple gaffe in time. The only possible plus is these things are small enough to convert into a bulky and likely uncomfortable faux wrist watch.

As for this Motorola unit, since it can do heart rate and also GPS it could be good for the very, very tiny niche that want/already have pricy Garmin GPS/heartrate watches and a mp3 player combined. But it is likely uneconomical to service this tiny market for such a large company. It will end up as an obvious failure.

Just noticed on their website "Motorola SF700 and Motorola SF500 sports headphones are sold separately and will be $149 and $99 MSRP respectively (if you look it's under Pricing and Availability near bottom)." Additional fail, lol.

Edit: pictures here.
Edit 2: after reading the blurb on their IEMs it makes me wonder if you need to have them for the heart monitor which is built-in with a ear sensor.

Apparently it has a speaker and mic, and once paired with your phone over bluetooth can serve as the wrist-mounted headset/speakerphone for it. Talk to your fist.
