Perhaps now we can run some battery benches.

So I ran a battery bench over night. The music was distributed thusly....
731MB on the internal memory, 29.3GB on a class 4 SanDisk card. Other assorted settings...ReplayGain was set to track gain if shuffling, clipping prevention enabled, pre-gain set at 4.5db, volume was at -24db, EQ was disabled, playback was set to shuffle all tracks. Breakdown of content.....3,914 tracks, average bitrate of 228kbps, MP3 (96.3%); WMA (3.0%); AAC (0.7%). Total runtime, 15 hours, 23 minutes, 46 seconds.

Is there a video tutorial, on how to manually install the bootloader on Windows?

You unzip the bootloader and the firmware to the root of the Zip, that's all.

I've done a few of battery benchmark tests now and found something I really didn't expect. I had found a old 2 GB SD card and was using that because I was changing content frequently and the small card refreshed quickly. It seemed the battery life wasn't great but it was charging during the content changes so I couldn't be sure.
When I did a battery benchmark test the results were really poor. 7 hrs 53 mins. I figured I had done something wrong and tried it again. The results were within 5 minutes of the first test. I figured I had a bad battery at that point. Then I remembered the poor results a couple of members got in this thread with SD, not sdhc cards. Changed the card for a 8 GB sdhc card and the results were more in line with what I had expected, 16 hrs. 16 mins. I haven't tried a test without any card inserted so I don't know if not having one in at all will make a difference. I'm not sure if doing that would have much value because I don't believe I'll ever be using it without the card. Since it's not likely anyone will be buying SD cards to use with the CZ this probably won't make much of a difference. It does leave me with the minor problem of what to do with this and a couple of other SD cards I have around. I sure won't be using them in a DAP anymore.

I don't think theres anything special about SD vs. SDHC cards in terms of hardware, so maybe it was just a bad card? Could be a short or something in it thats wasting power.

@skip, what codecs were your files....were they the medium-bitrate Vorbis that I think I recall you mentioning in the past?
Just curious because it looks like you got nearly an hour extra play time compared to my test. Then again, it could be your files were distributed more evenly than mine, which were almost all on the external card.

When i tested an external card verses internal on the clip+ there was just a couple minutes difference. So if the card is working right it shouldn't be using any extra power verses internal.

I need to dig up the 2 GB card I tested with before if I can. Looking at the thread I linked to I did get over 15 hrs with a 2 GB SD card in a Clip+. I just need to try to locate which one it is. I've got 3 of them.
![]() Marv, I used a blend of 50 -q5 Vorbis and 50 -V4 .mp3 in a playlist picked equally from the card and the player. That's what's transparent to me for portable use. I can sometimes ABX between that and lossless but not consistently. When I'm out and about in traffic or on a bus I can't hear any difference at all. Another difference in our tests is that for once I did it the recommended way. Reset everything, started the playlist going on repeat and only checked it by listening to the headphones to know when it had stopped. I'd guess if I had activated the screen any, used my standard EQ, Replaygain and other settings it would be less. No idea how much though. With the short results from the first tests I wanted to be sure I didn't have one with a defective battery. Now that I know it's not the battery and have the card with the poor results marked it shouldn't take much to see if the other 2 cards are having the same problem.

I was wondering if there is a way to lock the zip in Rockbox?

Just noticed you can hold the back button to boot to the OF with the new bootloader. That makes it a bit more convenient for me when I want to transfer data. Not that it's much different from holding the volume button, I'm just more used to that combination from other players.

Edit: if I simply extract this onto the players will it overwrite the old bootloader? Or will I need to do the removal....drop the SanDisk firmware on there, then start over with the new bootloader?

Skip252, yeah, Funman implemented both buttons for consistency among targets. But I do prefer the vol- one, it's easier to hold while plugging the Zip into USB, IMO.
![]() Marvin, no need to remove anything. It's just the new Sansa firmware - no changes on the Rockbox side of things.

OK then, good to know. I like the vol- button too, actually....the micro-USB doesn't slide in and out as easily as the mini-USB did on my Clip+.
