Holy bitrates Batman!
Here was the last one I encoded.....just from a DVD, no Blu-ray here.
Plays very nicely on the subtitles, since I watch with headphones on.

For a regular DVD I'd personally go for 2500kbps but thats just me lol

For me it depends on what the final output device is going to be. For general purpose SD content that will be played back on on portable devices, I typically don't do more than 1,000kbps (H.264 High Profile) simply because I won't notice artifacts on a screen that small. Now if this going to be upscaled on a larger screen then I jack up the bitrate.
