Looks nice IMO, but lack of external storage, high entry price, and no support for some popular video/audio codecs keep this off my list. I'm still gravitating towards a J3 when it comes time to replace my D2+.

I'm disappointed by this announcement

Strange that so far only Samsung managed to release a *decent* Android PMP to compete with the Apple Touch.

I really wonder what's wrong with Sony, Archos, Philips, Cowon & co.
And the Galaxy Player 4.0 is only based on the *old* Galaxy S, not even the GS2. Thus it's frightening to see how far are the competitors

Guess they just aren't interested enough in the PMP market (except for Philips, Archos, and Cowon since that is all they really do).

Lack of expandable storage -> no sale.

All that hardware wasted because of a lack of expandable storage.

Drop the prices $50, and add the Google Music app and I'd buy one. Sure would have been nice to have a microSD-HC slot though.

Sony's Memory Stick format competes directly against SD cards, so I doubt it will ever happen. Yes, Sony's Android tablets have micro SD slots, but they are the only exception.

I guess the fact that Memory Stick is only found on Sony products, and thus a minority in the market, people easily forget this.

No, tablets are not the only exception. Actually all latest Sony digital cameras and camcorders have been using SD cards for 2 years now. If a Sony PMP features expandable storage in the future, it would probably use a microSD slot.
Sony understood more or less that MS format is dead even though they still develop it.

I totally forgot that Sony made cameras.

And here I was just talking about people forgetting what should be common knowledge.

I had the oportunity to have a listen to this today by a friend who bought a 32Gb version. Its beautifully made, solidly built and I love the fact that the Android operating system allows the use of different player software and multi codec format playing posibilities but for the price it just doesn't go far enough... even if it had an SD slot, a digital line out and a quality camera I'd still be sticking to my X-series simply because it sounds better (to my ears) as I prefer a warmer sound.

To little, to late.. not for me.

Me, if it had the micro sdhc card slot @32gb I'd buy it. I'd prefer 64gb + a micro sdhc card slot,...but Sony are still holdover proprietary knuckleheads who won't give the fans what they want/need!!! That's why I recommend the Cowon Z2 over this,...especially since a 64gb SDXC card WILL work in it. And the Z2 is less expensive, and the sq is kickazz!!!

Sony eReaders have been using SD/MicroSD cards too, going back to the PRS-500 (their first e-ink eReader which also used Memory Sticks). For me, its a small disppointment that Sony doesn't offer some type of memory expansion on their audio players.

What makes the Z-Series a pass for me is the touch screen. After my experience with my X-Series player I'm very hesitant to consider any player with a touch screen.
