can't pair D3 to car

Trying to pair my D3 to my car. The D3 sees the car's bluetooth, but when I try to pair it, it will either stop trying right away, or take a second or two and then stop trying.
I've paired my phone to the car, so I know the proper way to do it and that it works.
Anyone know if there is a problem with the D3 bluetooth, or if maybe its trying to use a preset passcode instead of letting me enter the car's passcode?
