Computer won't recognize Cowon J3

I bought my Cowon J3 to work and had videos on there I wanted to watch.
When I turned it on the device was low on battery.

I looked around my work place for a connector use to charge it. Found one that belonged to a samsung phone and tried to use it to charge my Cowon J3. Didn't work, what it did was make the J3 freeze. I had to do a hard reset to make it work again.

I take it back home to add more music it to it using my own USB cable that came with the J3 except my computer won't pick it up. Neither my family computer or my PS3. All it does is charge.

I tried switching between MSC/MTP, I also tried hard resets a couple of time but my computers doesn't pick up the J3 when it is connected.

Can I get advice on this? I'd appreciate it.

All I can suggest is

- Contact Cowon

- Try using an SD card; at least (if it works) you'll be able to listen to knew music while you get the problem resolved

- Wait for someone who knows more - much more - than me to turn up

exactly same problem for me. I plug the cable in and all it does is charging. It doesnt pop up any window or anything so I can move files to it.

Although a random cable might fit the J3, what goes through it wont always match.
Sounds like you blew the USB's D+ and/or D- line(s) or something important-ish.

Lucky the Samsung connector didn't apply 5V directly to the Battery Pass-Through pin.
The fiery result ain't pretty. I shorted mine looking for Line-In pin-outs and the battery got very warm - still works though.

my advice is to:
- see if cowon can repair/replace your J3,
- since it still powers up, think of treating it like an oldskool tape player and buy some SD cards for it.
- use your imagination...

I am now having the same problem. I am using the official Cowon cable.

It has connected to the PC and I have transferred files to it several times before.

But it will not appear as a device in My Computer now.
