Need a player app that remembers what it played

Through the summer, my friends and I sit around a campfire on Saturday nights drinking beer and listening to our favorite music all night. We're currently running Winamp on a simple Windows box, and it works fine and all, but a common complaint is that we hear some songs all the time, and others almost never. We've got a playlist of about 500 songs, so we could easily go a few nights before listening to all of them.

What I'd always felt would be perfect for us is some fairly intelligent software that could remember what it had previously played and base its random picks on that. All songs would start out with the same odds of getting picked, but once a song got picked, its odds would be greatly reduced. These statistics would obviously have to be remembered from session to session (week to week).

Is there anything vaguely like that out there? And I apologize if I haven't done a great job of explaining what I'm looking for.

Did you check to see if "Repeat songs" is enabled in WinAmp? Clear that setting and it should be good.

Also, if your using a laptop, try MediaMonkey. It can shuffle, and you can choose to NOT replay tracks that have already been listened to. I use it all the time.

Oh, and 2 more options that do the same are the Zune software and J.River Media Jukebox. Both are great choices.

Unless I'm misunderstanding how Winamp works, the repeat songs feature is only valid for one session, right? I mean, if we play a couple hundred songs tonight and then fire it up again next week, it's not going to remember what it played, will it?

If you create a 500 song playlist it will remember it, unless you clear it. And you can create multiple playlists and save them all.

As for settings, WinAmp will remember if you set it to shuffle, play one song repeatedly, have repeat off, etc. You'd need to manually change settings to turn a feature on OR off. WinAmp doesn't "forget". None of them do,...you just need to adjust the software's settings to do what you want it to do.

Get a DAP with 'Shuffle' instead of 'Random'

When it shuffles the playlist it just mixes them up and goes down it, a random just randomly picks songs and almost always picks it random favorites.

Maybe my problem has been that I'm over-thinking this. We should probably just stick with the same playlist till we almost run out of songs and then re-create a new one.
