Default Microsoft continues to improve Windows Phone Marketplace quality

Streamlining the Windows Phone Marketplace isn’t the only thing Microsoft is doing to improve its mobile app storefront. The Redmond software giant has revealed that it will be increasing its efforts to keep the Marketplace clean, easy to search, and free of patent infringements.

While Microsoft already polices trademark infringements on the Windows Phone Marketplace, the company plans to step up its efforts in this area. Images will also be under more scrutiny. Microsoft will soon begin requiring apps published in bulk to have unique icons to help users differentiate between apps with similar functionality. More importantly, all app logos must be clean and modest. Developers that fail to meet Microsoft’s standards will eventually have their apps removed.

The somewhat shady policy of submitting apps in multiple categories or with unrelated keywords is also being cracked down upon. Apps found in more than one category will be automatically deleted, and those with more than five keywords—the limit, as stated in the Marketplace policy—will have all of the keywords removed. As with the images, Microsoft will attempt to work with developers before flat out removing an app from the Windows Phone Marketplace. Users who come across an app in violation of Microsoft’s policies can also send an email to reportapp@microsoft.com to initiate an investigation.

This is a welcome change, and should help make the Windows Phone Marketplace better for everyone. Do you think these improvements will keep it clean, fun, and friendly for users?
