1) can u make 'on the fly' playlists easily enough?

2) can u make the volume buttons (and Menu) give a different function (perhaps when in hold mode) like skip track etc?

They call it favorites and you can read about it in their manual on page 16 here

You can change the function of certain buttons but I don’t recall which ones, haven’t been using mine lately.

Well i just bought the good ol' black. I feared white would pick marks up too easily, and red is not for me. Now if they had green....

If you read the reviews, I think you’ll find the UI a little hard to get use to as it’s not as intuitive as the two players you just mentioned. But going with the i9 is an inexpensive way to check out Cowon’s SQ and JetEffects sound enhancement features which are really nice IMHO.

This has BBE doesn't it? As long as it has all the tweaks that previous cowons have (X5, D2 etc) then i'll be happy.

I still have my wifes D2, but she doesn't let it outta her sight (especially since being a convert to IEMs).

The D2 would be too big and chunky for me to wear anyway (for my cleaning job), so i focused on cowons lightest and cheapest entry player (but not the E2).

I mainly use my clips/fuze for playing all tracks on shuffle, or selecting a few artists and playing those tracks, then its a case of clean and hit volume up or down and skip a track here or there.
I can handle a learning curve for new tech, im most concerned with realtime use.

Sound-wise, with no EQ or enhancements enabled, it's better than the D2.....newer hardware and all. And it does have newer BBE settings too. Just don't expect D2 battery life....lol.

Oh that's good to hear, yeh wasn't expecting D2's famous battery life.
I feel sympathy for manufacturers sometimes, we ask for awesum battery life and we get little lovely bricks like the d2 and c2, good for sum ppl, and then not right for ppl like me.
Wasn't the X5 and XL the same device yet XL slightly thicker providing larger battery life?
Perhaps thats what sansa should do with the clips lol

Last I checked running rockbox on the Clip was yielding me around 15hr and i9 was over 22 but you can look here to read what others on abi were getting back when it was first released.

Yeh i never get close to those times with either my clip+ or zip. I have brightness set to full i think and timing out after 10secs, and as stated above usually just shuffle and skip the odd track here or there, or take 2mins out to build a playlist (which then results in less track skipping afterwards).

Yeh i know, truth is tho, i have had it way lower and still wasn't making much time up for it (maybe saving me 30mins over the course of my working day), so i figured i would rather have it nice and bright and easy to read than dull and me squinting lol.
Don't get me wrong, if i leave the player on shuffle, no heads attached I do get decent battery life, but i must listen to it loudly and tinker with it alot more than most or summin, 9hrs tops is what i get real time use.
