Default New Walkmen! E580 & E380

I just got this news on my feed, Sony is releasing two new Walkmen in their E Series lineup. Source - http://www.slashgear.com/sony-walkma...nano-10289702/

What are your thoughts? Seems badly outclassed without a card slot FLAC comes finally though, but what's the point of FLAC without a card slot? :/

I'm definitely in for the 16gb model,...but I really wish it went to 32gb minimum.

Do you listen to FLAC? How many FLACs would you be able to put in 16GB?

If lossy tunes are preferred, the E580 seems nice, but I wonder how it will be priced... <150$ or <200$ ?

Sadly, they've never done the card slot thing.

Agreed, 32GB would be just right.

I keep it on my hard drives as an archive, but almost never listen to it, because my computer's sound quality is sketchy.

Depends on who encoded them and what compression level they used. But seriously, there's no point in using FLAC on a DAP.

That's the big question....how will they price it. A 16GB player shouldn't cost over $100, IMO.

Sony put card slots on some of their digital recorders under $100. They don't want people to buy a cheap 4GB or GB mp3 player and stick a $20 32Gb card in it. they would rather charge you $200+ or is it $250+ or $300+ for a 32GB player. The Sony stereo digital mp3 recorders under $100 with a card slot don't seem to support bitrates over 192kbps. I guess they don't want people to use these as music players.

I don't use FLAC, and my current Sony S639's battery is on the way out. I want the 77hr battery, and 16gb is as low as I'd go without a micro SD card slot. And I expect it to be around $150ish when released,...NOT $200-$300.

Interesting....I'm re-purposing a 16GB microsd and I'm surprised at how much music I am fitting on it. Granted, the Sony player will be more like 14GB usable, but I'm a little more intrigued now than I was, assuming the price isn't out of hand.

The deciding factor in this will probably be a combination of the final pricing, and whether or not I find the one Clip Zip that is missing....lol.

You know me already, as I prefer the sq of the Sony's over almost any player available. Plus I loads a few albums, then the rest is all playlists. 16gb (14gb usable?) would suffice, but I much prefer minimum 32. But for Sony sq + 77hrs battery life I'd be willing to compromise.

Out of curiosity (since I've long since given up on considering players that don't support Rockbox), do Sony players currently have gapless playback for LAME-encoded MP3s?

Not the ones that I have had in the past.

$150 is probably the mosy Sony could charge for a 16GB player. The $200-$300 I was referring to is for a 32GB Sony player. A 16GB card costs around $10, but Sony charges at least $50 more for a 32GB player than for a 16GB one.

My thoughts on the E580:

The size is great. The battery life is awesome (if true, more likely about 55 to 60 hours, which is still amazing). Price should be right around $150 to $200 depending upon the size and region.

But then there's that damn 16 GB limit... That battery life combined with 32 or even 64 GB would be an instant purchase. I'd love another Sony player, but 16 GB is just too small these days.

Sony, just release higher capacity players. We'll buy them, trust me.

+ a million. Day one purchase if they come with at least 32gb

I'm keen to hear a Sony player (mainly because TDS seems to value them so highly and has tried the rest).
I'm not sure who will end up buying this, there are other choices;

Clipzip = microsd card/expandable and cheap, decent sq but poor battery life
Cowon i9+ = 32gb and cowon sound quality, decent battery life (20-30hrs), bit pricey tho.
Sony E580 = great battery life but only 16gb limit... (cheaper than i9+ tho prolly)

Is the sound quality of the Sony players THAT significant people would pass a cheaper alternative like the clipzip, or pass on a solution that many might be overlooking (like the cowon i9+)? I have to hear one to believe it, because I can't imagine anything sounding much better than the cowon i9+ (not being a fan boi just honestly saying not sure how I can get better sound).

I have been using my i9+ for a few months now, paired mostly with the Soundmagic E10's. I managed to get my hands on Sony's XBA3's and XBA2's cheaply, the difference wasn't night and day (and these are $250-350 IEMs). They were an improvement but only to specific genres, other genres (like Metal) I think the E10's actually sounded better. For sure the XBA's isolate better (which has its pluses and minus') and seperation seems more apparent.
Anyway, if anything its made me appreciate my E10s all the more, incredible budget IEMs!

So my point is, if im pairing a cowon i9+ with $350 IEMs, listening to 320kbps files... does it get much better than that?
Do I need to go FLAC next?

Before anyone rushes out and grabs a 16gb E580 do think very carefully about the 16gb cap. Don't do a Bruce (lol), it wasn't enough for me, i used to own the i9 (16gb) and sold it to afford the i9+ (after ALSO getting a C2 for the expandable mem), all of this within a year lol. If FLAC is my next port of call then there is no way I can live with 16gb, 32gb would even be pushing it.

These are on sale now - the E580 is 100.

I don't see the value anymore in any player that doesn't connect to the internet, although 77 hours battery life is nice.

I used my E474 about 4 times before selling it.

Care to share a link? advancedmp3players don't have it listed, and amazon.uk wasn't showing much success.

So the E580 is priced the same as Cowon's i9+ 16gb, but of course you can get a 32gb i9+ for 129quid also. It's worth noting that the original i9 16gb has had a pretty decent price drop, down to 79quid (and there really is no noticeable difference between a 16gb i9 and i9+).

The difference I see between an i9 and a E580 is Sony's vastly superior battery life (prolly about 70hrs vs 25ish).

Above all I see terrible touchpad vs tactile buttons
