Unhappy Charging and recognition problems for my ZVM

I got my ZVM a couple of weeks ago and it worked great. All of the sudden one day my computer stopped recognizing it and charging it. The docked symbol doesn't appear anymore; just the little lightning bolt, and it never charges up at all. I tried it on my laptop and that failed to recognize it as well. I have reinstalled all of the software multiple times without result. I have rolled back to windows media player 10 without result. I checked on the device manager for my computer and it doesn't even recognize the zen. And I can't cleanup the player or reformat it because it isn't charged.
-I checked the pins inside the zen, and they are not damaged.
-Also the player still worked fine until the charge ran out.

Any ideas? Is my ZVM toast? Should I send it back?

That doesn't sound good. Is there any way you can find an AC adapter that you can plug into your DC Input jack to charge it up? Then you could find out if it's recognizable again, or at least get into Recovery Mode.

I have a wall charger on the way (should be here today) so I'm going to see if that will charge it, and then I will try and get into recovery mode, but if that doesn't work I think I'm going to send it back and get a new one.

Good idea.

BTW... Is it me, or is this place getting overrun by aardvarks? There's three Aardvark-based screen names registered here now! Not that it's a problem - I just find it kinda funny.

Well it just goes to show

You wait years for an Aardvark and then 3 show up at the same time

So...my wall charger finally got here and it charged up my zen all the way no problem. I went into recovery mode and did disk cleanup. My computers still do not recognize it. Should I reformat it? I am hesitant to because my player works fine, I just can't put anything new on it. I don't want to lose all my music if I dont have to. Ideas? Thx.

I have some other information regarding my situation which might be relevant. My ZVM worked on my computer up until the time it got a bunch of viruses and spyware. Then it stopped working. I wiped my hardrive clean of everything. I have reinstalled SP2 and WMP 11 and all of the creative software, but maybe there is some software my computer needs because it still cant recognize the zen. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew. Also, I just realized that I can't install the creative software on my laptop. It always has errors and says "cannot create shortcut to Creative Media Explorer" etc. What can I do?

Since you reinstalled Windows and everything, you may need to go into your Device Manager and uninstall/reinstall the MTP drivers. There's a section in my FAQ thread that details how to do this.

As for your laptop - what staxchipswell said: Are you logged in with an Administrator account?

I have looked in my device manager on my computer and there is not even a subcategory for portable USB devices. My ZVM is not under anything in device manager. As for the laptop, I am not sure whether or not I have USB 2.0. How can I check? thx. Also I've tried adding hardware and it doesnt recognize anything.

Does anything happen when you plug in your player?

It will light up and the lightning bolt will flash in the upper right hand corner. Or if its fully charged it shows the little outlet plug. Other than that nothing happens. no docking symbol nor any recognition whatsoever on the computer.

Have you tried another computer, or another USB cable?

Are other USB devices working? It could be that the USB drivers did not get loaded properly. I am not sure about this - but it seems to me that you could get power out of the USB even though the drivers are not installed; someone else is gonna have to answer that one.

Try resetting your ZVM. This might help.

Other than that, I'm out of ideas. The problem is most likely an issue with your computer.

You have to look at ZenChick's FAQ thread again, your prob has to be MTP or USB look for a "try this" link.
