Default ZVM and Napster vs iTunes

I've been a happy Napster user (subscription service) for a few years now mainly because it's so easy to use with my ZVM. However of late I've been wanting a wider selection (but with a narrower focus: ethnic music from Middle east, Persia, French hurdy gurdy, etc. Napster has surprised me with a selection of kamancheh, hurdy gurdy and baglama albums, but searching for is hit and miss) and I was wondering if iTunes would be an alternative?

As I understand I would need to download and install the iTunes software before i could browse music, right? And there's no way to audition tunes before buying/downloading, right? And you pay per track/album, right (as opposed to the "renting" subscription service of Napster)?

And then there's the issue of a player ... I'd have to use an iPod for iTunes (that would be a deal breaker I think), right?
