Using Zen V plus a Mic?

I want to use the Line-In recording feature with a Lavalier mic so we can do podcasts of people's speeches in my company.

However when I bought a small mic at Radioshack it didn't seem to pick anything up at all? Do I need a pre-amp attached to the mic? Help! Also what's the smallest solution to this problem? Something that could fit in their pocket as they walk around? That's the reason we bought the Zen V in the first place.
